Okay, this is Evan writing this, and we're gonna start from the very
very beginning. It all started in 8th grade (this would mean that
Jim was in 6th grade, but he's unimportant at this juncture of the tale),
when Evan was trying to figure out his next instrument. He'd already
tried his hand at piano, flute (shut up, it's manly), french horn, baritone
horn, saxaphone and a little guitar (but his sister threw a temper tantrum
and broke its neck in the process, she's just lucky i didn't break hers).
He figured, "why not try the bass? all the metal and rock bands I listen
to have bass lines that just follow the root notes of the guitar...it'll
be easy!" Boy, was he ever wrong....
So he started taking lessons and trying to play. It was at this
time that he started hanging out with a very cool kid in his music class
at PVC. That would be John Brady, who had been playing drums for
a while. They started jamming together in class, and watched as girls
started to accumulate outside the door of the room they were playing at
(they came to see John). Evan and John hooked
up with a few friends (including Oli from One Last Shot who was playing
guitar), but it didn't last long, practices failed and nothing came of
it.
Determined to keep going, John and Evan invited one of Evan's oldest
friends, Ethan to play with them. Ethan had been playing guitar for
a while, and he seemed the logical choice. They also acquired Frank
Ronci (if you've visited Croton, you may actually know some of these people)
on guitar. They went through about 300,000 names (Passive Insanity,
5 Dead Cheerleaders and Chi being the most remembered) and a lead singer and played 3 shows in their 3 year career (2 birthday parties and a Javafest). They finally
realized that their practices had boiled down to playing Mario Kart 64
all day and drinking John's coke. They remained friends but gave
up musically, but it had been a good experience cause Evan had begun to
experiment with song writing.
This takes us to 10th grade (Jim would've been in 8th grade, but he
still doesn't matter.........yet). Evan was depressed cause he wasn't
making music and he didn't have a girlfriend....so he poured his frustrations
into song writing (he had just gotten his Epiphone Acoustic, which helped)
and began looking for a band. He took on a friend from Ossining named
Jake on drums, his friend Pete (Sax player for Coming Up Short)on bass
and his neighbor Lee on guitar. He also took a protege under his
wing. Young Jim Cobb (see he is part of the story!!) proved himself
a vital cornerstone (i wrote that, Jim had nothing to do with it, he's
not being pretentious, says I) on guitar. As per a suggestion by
Jake, they called themselves Animal 59 (this is where everyone reading
this groans and remembers the tragic and sickening life of that band) but
could never get together often enough but signed up to play Javafest (a
local show at Temple Israel). The band consisted of Evan on guitar
and vocals, Jim on guitar and vocals and Jake on percussion (okay, so they
were bongos....fuck off), and they called themselves the Chicken McNugget
Folktastrophe (a take-off on Animal 59 *groannnn*). Though a huge
success, outside pressures forced the band to go into hiding.
Then one day, Jim called Evan and asked if Animal 59 could officially
disband. He wanted to join some fledling band called Coming Up Short.
Evan didn't really care and he figured that the band was dead in the water
anyway and Jim should continue on exploring music. If you want the
story to that band go to, www.comingupshort.com
cause i don't want to talk about them in our history (they kick ass).
That was 11th grade (9th for Jim, he matters now).
Now we're at the present day. Evan had played the next Javafest
with Pete on bass and his old drummer buddy John. Months later, March
10th to be exact, Evan turned 18 and began looking for a present for his
parents to buy him. He settled on (settled...hah! that's a good one,
more like thanked the heavens that he found..) a Gretsch Double Anniversary.
His mother, gave him the ultimatum that since he now had such a nice guitar,
he should start a band and use the damn thing. So, he went back to
his friend John and his friend Jim to start a band. Jim was thrown
on bass and the rest will hopefully be history. See you all on Behind
the Music!!! (I'll be the one with the sex addiction.......muhuwahahahahahaha!!!!
